AIDS, GREED AND THE HELL WITH YOU…………
Amandala, one of the leading newspapers in
Belize, recently ran an article on AIDS. Written by Adele Ramos-Daly.
In the article they said that the first case of AIDS was detected
in Belize in 1986, and since then 3,600 Belizeans have tested positive.
Consider that number when the Rand McNally in 1997 reported the
population of Belize to be 217,000. Amandala continued by saying
that the most affected age group to day are young people, particularly
females, ages 15 to 29 and males 30 to 49, suggesting a transmission
trend from older men to younger women.
From my view, the problem grows larger from
GREED: which in our age is the primacy of material values. In this
kind of social climate, it is the higher values like idealism, unselfishness,
justice, love that become either completely eclipsed, or subservient
to those of a raging egocentric individualism whose blind struggle
for “mine” resembles the law of the jungle.
Under this kind of outlook, if someone gets AIDS he or she asks
the question “why should I give up my fun in having sex?”
We even have the kind of person who becomes angry because he or
she has AIDS and seeks to give it to as many other people as possible!
How do we know this is happening, well look at the numerous cases
that have come before the courts on this very subject.
Do we have people like that in Belize? Of
course! Under GREED there could be no other answer!
What we need is a national health card to be issued to everyone
who has taken a test for AIDS. It MUST not be run by the government,
because some in the government would jest sell the card to anyone
willing to pay a good price (GREED again) so they can continue to
have their “fun”. Some private organization must be
set up to run the program that can be overseen and monitored by
several other organizations to ensure a proper result.
Just to keep saying use condoms is like throwing
a glass of water at a forest fire
